What the parts and labor columns show
Parts are the larger component in 15 of the 16 selected estimates. Using the midpoint of each published parts estimate divided by the midpoint of its total estimate, parts work out to roughly 48% to 77% of the total, with a median near 71%. This is a calculation from the published ranges, not a separate RepairPal statistic — the one exception is the Nissan Altima, where the calculated parts share is 48%.
Labor varies more than you'd guess, and not by vehicle size. The lowest labor estimate here is the Jeep Wrangler at $155–$227; the highest is the BMW X5 at $501–$736. A Ford F-150 ($194–$284) is estimated below a Honda Accord ($244–$358). In this selected sample, labor doesn't track vehicle size cleanly; access and required service operations are more directly relevant to the quoted time.
Truck size alone doesn't predict the model-level estimate. In this selected sample the Ford F-250 Super Duty estimate is lower than the F-150 estimate. This comparison doesn't isolate model year, engine, brake-assist design, or configuration, so it shouldn't be read as a vacuum-versus-hydroboost cost comparison — the same nameplate can be built with either system.

Since parts are usually the larger half, it's worth knowing what you're choosing between. The comparison below sticks to attributes verifiable on any specific listing rather than assigning quality grades or a price ranking.

Remanufactured units start with a used core that is disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and rebuilt. Some applications may offer a lower upfront purchase price, but the exact comparison depends on the part number, core deposit, seller, and warranty terms.
New aftermarket units are newly manufactured rather than rebuilt from a used core, so they generally don't require a core return. Pricing varies by application — compare the exact part number, included hardware, warranty terms, and delivered cost rather than relying on the category label.

Read the warranty terms, not the warranty label
A parts warranty and a repair warranty are different things, in every category.

- What's covered: the part, the labor, or both?
- How long, and from what date — shipment, delivery, or installation?

- What does the return process require, and by when?

What makes some jobs take longer
- Access. On some vehicles the booster fasteners are reachable from the engine bay; on others they're behind the dashboard, which changes the operation substantially.
- Corrosion. Firewall fasteners that have been through many heat cycles can seize, and extraction is unbudgeted time.
- Post-repair service procedures. Some brake systems require a scan-tool-assisted bleed, commissioning, or calibration. Whether yours does depends on the specific year, model, and brake system.

Core charge: a refundable deposit, not a fee
Many remanufactured listings include a core charge — a refundable deposit returned when you send back the old unit so it can be rebuilt.
Two things people get wrong about it:
- It's real money upfront. Your card is charged the part price plus the deposit, and you get the deposit back only after the old unit is returned.
- There's no standard amount. Core charges vary by retailer, product line, and individual part number. Check the deposit on the specific listing before ordering — it's shown at checkout and isn't uniform across a catalog.

To recover it, follow the retailer's stated process — packaging, residual fluid handling, and return window are all set by the retailer. New aftermarket units generally carry no core charge.
Bleeding: required sometimes, not always
This is the item most often misdescribed online.
Bleeding is required if the hydraulic circuit is opened, or if the vehicle-specific service procedure calls for it. A single published Hyundai service bulletin makes the point cleanly: for one Elantra configuration it instructs the technician to remove the master cylinder mounting nuts and "carefully place the master cylinder aside" — the lines stay connected and the system is never opened. For another configuration in the same bulletin, the brake tube is disconnected from the master cylinder, and the final step is to bleed the brake, ABS, and ESP systems (Hyundai TSB 17-01-015, NHTSA recall 17V063). Same model, different configuration, different answer.
Beyond conventional bleeding, some electronic and integrated brake systems require a scan-tool-assisted bleed, commissioning, or calibration. Hyundai's published procedure for the Active Hydraulic Boost system on the Sonata HEV/PHEV and Ioniq is a four-step sequence — system bleeding with the control unit off, then on, then a diagnostic-tool fluid circulation mode, then a pedal travel sensor calibration — and it calls for a dedicated bleeding tool and adapter (Hyundai TSB 20-BR-001H). Whether any of this applies is determined by the specific year, model, and brake system, not by a model-year cutoff.

Follow the OEM service procedure for your exact year, model, and brake system. That's the only reliable answer, and it's the one a good shop will give you.
Brake fluid and booster contamination
There's a common claim that brake fluid moisture degrades a brake booster's internal seals. For a conventional vacuum booster, that isn't how it works: the vacuum booster is not part of the hydraulic circuit. Brake fluid doesn't normally reach it.
What does happen: if the master cylinder's rear piston seal fails, brake fluid can leak past it into the booster housing. Cardone's technical FAQ describes exactly this — fluid found between the master cylinder and booster indicates a failing master cylinder piston seal, and both components are then addressed together.
If brake fluid is found at the rear of the master cylinder or inside the booster interface, inspect both components and follow the vehicle manufacturer's service procedure. Some applications call for replacing the booster once fluid contamination is confirmed.
Brake fluid condition matters for the hydraulic system's own health, on the vehicle manufacturer's service interval. Follow those intervals; a booster replacement isn't automatically a trigger for one.
Replacing the master cylinder at the same time
On many conventional vacuum-booster and hydroboost layouts, the master cylinder is mounted directly to the booster and must be moved or removed during service. Doing both at once can save a second disassembly.
That's an argument for checking the master cylinder, not for replacing it by default. Replace it at the same time only when leakage, internal bypass, fluid contamination, or another confirmed fault is present, or when the service procedure calls for it.
DIY vs Professional Installation

When DIY is a reasonable call
- The vehicle uses a conventional vacuum booster accessible from the engine bay.
- You've confirmed the booster is the failed component — not the vacuum supply, check valve, or master cylinder.
- You've checked the OEM service procedure for your exact vehicle and it doesn't require equipment you don't have.
When to leave it to a shop
- Hydroboost systems operate on pressurized power steering fluid and have their own service and bleed procedures.
- Electric and integrated electro-hydraulic systems may require scan-tool bleeding, commissioning, or calibration. Basic consumer scan tools may not support these procedures; some capable bidirectional tools do. Check what your vehicle's procedure requires before starting.
- Behind-the-dash access turns a moderate job into a long one.
If you finish the job and the pedal feels spongy, don't assume it's a system quirk. A spongy pedal can result from incomplete bleeding, a hydraulic leak, an assembly error, or another hydraulic fault. Have it inspected before the vehicle is driven.
Before You Buy: Confirm the Booster Is Actually the Problem
Parts are the biggest line item, which makes a misdiagnosis expensive. Several symptoms point at the brake-assist system generally rather than at the booster specifically.
Common indicators that assist has been lost or reduced:

If you've lost brake assist, don't keep driving
NHTSA recall documentation states the mechanism directly: "A loss of brake assist can result in hard pedal feel and increased effort during pedal application thereby increasing stopping distances" (Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-410). This guide can't set a safe threshold that holds across every vehicle, every degree of failure, and every driver.
Do not continue driving with a suspected loss of brake assist. Move the vehicle only as far as necessary to reach a safe stopping position, then arrange professional inspection or towing.
